Raid Guidelines
From Insurgency Wiki
This is a guide to help everybody attending the IRL raids on Scientology centers.
Don't call anybody stupid. The best way to put somebody completely out of touch is to call them or their beliefs dumb. Realize that these are just regular people who joined this for a desire for truth, for a sense of belonging. Many of them want to get out and don't have a way to. We should portray ourselves as people with a desire to help, not just a validation that the "wog world" is filled with enemies that want to hurt them.
You don't have to bring up Xenu so much. Most Scientologists don't even know about this. As much as it has been portrayed in popular media it's very easy for them to shrug off with "that's a lie." You sound as silly repeating it as they do believing in it.
Do not break any laws. Don't bring any weapons. You may think that your safety may be in danger, but there will almost certainly be police present. Giving Scientology any excuse to have you arrested will only damage the cause, and will most certainly damage you. For more information go to this site: http://www.copwatchla.org//index.cgi?content=check-a-pig It's legal precedence focuses on LA and California, but the website links to other major cities in the country and may be relevant to your interests.
Scientologists may assault you. They will bump you out of the way, they will trample over your stuff, and they will get right in your face: so close you can smell the bad breath of their thetans. If you're really lucky they might bring out their brigade to march past you like some kind of twisted parade. Do not respond to this. They want nothing more than for you to get into a physical altercation with them. They bump you, you push them back, and then they next thing you know they are sueing you. Turn the other cheek, for lack of a better phrase.
You may be confronted by the police. Make sure they are legitimate police officers and not just sci renta cops. Ask them for their identification and that you be allowed to call their station to verify their position. If they ask you for ID or to remove your mask, ask them to do so in private. If they tell you to disperse tell them you have a constitutional right to assembly and that under California law no person, whether or not acting under color of law, can prevent you from exercising your constitutional rights. You might want to print this out and bring it along for their reference. http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/cacodes/pen/422.6-422.95.html
Scientology's most aggressive members will attempt to bull bait you into a confrontation. They will ask you things such as "What are your crimes?" and "What are you afraid of?" Be calm and rationale. They are trying to put you on the defense. Don't let them! Change the subject back to Scientology. When they ask "What are your crimes?" say "Let's talk about Scientology's crimes." and then go into the various crimes Scientology has committed. When they say "What are you afraid of?" reply "What is the Church of Scientology afraid of?" and ask them why they so violently attack Scientology opponents. http://www.jaymorrissey.com/2008/01/09/the-art-of-verbal-intimidation-learn-it-and-fight-back/ has good techniques to use to battle these attacks.
Scientology will bring cameras for a variety of reasons, the biggest of which is to intimidate. Bring many cameras as possible to catch every angle. It has been suggested that a main camera team with a big overt camera, lighting guys, sound boom would be good to keep their focus on, and smaller, more covert mini-cameras to catch anything they might try to do outside of the main camera's view.
Being followed by Scientology is a real possibility. Blend in with a crowd. When you leave the protest try to go through heavily populated areas. Try not to travel alone. When the raid is petering down try to get everybody to disperse at once to make it harder for them to follow you. If they catch you by yourself unfortunate things can (and have) happen to people. Take public transit, but be prepared for a Scientologist to get on the empty bus with you and sit right behind you. This is one of their favorite forms of intimidation.
It has also been suggested that during any of these activities that you avoid mentioning the names of past or other scientology critics, such as Keith Henson. Doing so could open you up to liability by being accused of "acting in concert" with any of these such individuals who had been prosecuted of a crime during their anti-scientology actions.
