Press coverage for Project Chanology; media attention MUST be gotten to win this war.

For links to news articles already made about this project, see Project Chanology/Media Archive or Project Chanology/Anon Media.

irc.711chan.org #press for the IRC channel. There is a plan to get on major media sources. An offical PR document has been written. If you wish to join the media cause and want documents, or have information pertaining to contacting them, or perhaps are a member of the press or know one, please join us on IRC.

Media is required, not just for the truly epic lulz, but also to actually hurt Scientology; we can give the power to the Internet people to do as we can, but only mass media attention to the raids and the followup action of the public will be able to actually destroy them.

If you want to read the PR release, see it here: http://www.prlog.org/10047683-internet-conflict-with-scientology-expands.html

To all Anons: we had to make ourselves seem... nicer... in that release.

A lot of places have already done reports on Anon's glorious actions against scientology. To read up on it, see the 'Mentions in Mainstream Media' article, under Scientology.

PR work

  • irc.partyvan.org #press

As good as the YouTube videos are at reaching the internet audience, we cannot hope to reach the rest of the world if we do not write media outlets. It's important to note that media doesn't like to take a side (with the exception of FOX, which will almost always take the side you're not on); we need to convince these news outlets that this is a just cause and to take our side. This should be a primary concern; even direct recruitment isn't as important as news coverage.

Here are some instructions on writing in:

1. Write a statement unique to your location. Don't make it look like it's simply a form with blanks for the name of your location. Personalization helps show that we really are everywhere and we're not just some isolated group living in the mountians or something (though I'm sure some of us do). You absolutely must make it clear that we are nonviolent and that our only goal is to expose (and eventually dismantle) the Church of Scientology (but not the belief; just the organization). Make this point so obvious that even a small child could understand.

2. Include evidence and proof. You must show them what Scientology really is; there should be nothing left to the imagination. Make it clear that what you sent them as proof is not all that there is, as well.

3. Try to reference the Scientology murders, and especially Lisa's murder (which is the most well-known and the easiest for the news stations to get information on).

4. Make the return address somewhere that you can pick up return mail safely from, but also be sure not to use your own address. If the person that receives it is a Scientologist, this could have some unintended consequences for you.

5. If you're really concerned about privacy, wear gloves when handling anything you send.

6.Make sure not to portray Anonymous as hackers on steroids, script kiddies, or dumb-ass teenagers.

Remember, news coverage is paramount to our success.

Members of Anonymous acting as press

At some events, Anonymous members may make the decision not to act as a protester, but instead to act solely as a member of the media. While it is expected that most Anons attending events will be in posession of a camera, these members would make the decision to distance themselves from the protest, and not partake in slogans, shouting, or carrying banners or handing out leaflets. They would be purely at the event as an impartial witness, preferably physically distanced from the action, preferably producing publication-quality material, whether for submitting to independent news organizations (eg Indymedia), or in the instance of high quality photographs, to professional media who do not cover the event, but do accept submissions of such materials.

The photos and video and reports generated by these members may, in sad cases, be used as legal evidence, so where possible - shoot in RAW (which has stood up in court before), shoot the date and time on a newspaper or similar, if possible, in the same frame as the subject material. Hopefully, this will never be needed. It is to the personal discretion of the member as to copyright agreements for any work produced, especially if dealing with professional media organisations.

These members should be aware that they may be the particular targets of the CoS's security teams, they may face harassment, and should be prepared for this. Read up on your rights as a member of the media. Follow the Anonymous code of ethics and do not take photos of any Anonymous member at any time that they are not wearing a mask. This is very important.

There are legal protections for members of the media, and identifying yourself as a member of the media, as opposed to a participant of the protest, is important. IANAL, if anyone with legal experience could expand this paragraph, it would be appreciated. For UK photographers, a brief guide is here, in handy leaflet form. [1]

A press pass [2] has been created. Print both sides and affix them to a card, and insert into a rigid ID card holder that is visible on your person. Please only wear this pass if you are a member of the press as described above, rather than a protest participant who is merely wielding a camcorder.

People we should contact

DO NOT CONTACT BY YOURSELF, GET ON IRC FIRST
Anderson Cooper has been surprisingly tough on Scientology in recent reports. Unless you can find actual contact info, "general comments" through CNN is the usual way to reach him. Thank him for his recent reports, alert him to the ongoing struggle, and urge him to keep up the fight.
If you send anything to your local paper, give them Anonymous@ChanEnterprises.org as a contact email and we will handle it. Send them the official PR doc too for great justice. ^^ Is this still valid? Looks to be dead and down.

Also, one media outlet that has here-so-far been ignored is the tabloids.
I don't personally know anyone who buys them, but if you ask someone five minutes after they waited in line at Kroger what the front page story was, they could tell you. This seems like their kind of story too, "INTERNET DECLARES WAR ON SCIENTOLOGY, TOM CRUISE". This way there can be coverage of the February 10 events and thus possibly other, more mainstream media will take notice and cover later events.
It may not be that respectable, but quite frankly, respectable is something that has to be earned, and DDoS attacks and fax-bombs aren't going to get you space in the New York Times. Right now, any coverage is publicity and publicity is the goal.

We have several 'ins' with mainstream Hollywood old media. Joel Sappell from the LA Times co-authored a six part expose of the CoS in 1990 and has expressed interest in our cause. Also, former Spy magazine (amongst many others) contributor, Mark Ebner from Hollywood Interuppted is currently at 'war' with the 'church'. Knowing him, he'd be moar than happy to 'join' us. A Recommendation handed from an SA Goon with Experience in the field

B-B! posted:

Ok I have to weigh in. As a working member of the media, I can tell you guys none of what you are suggesting is going to get you media coverage, at least television coverage. All of my experience is in television, so I will speak to how to draw TV attention only.

1) It is extremely important that you don't approach them as an activist group. Stations are constantly bombarded by A.C.O.R.N., Greenpeace/Sierra Club type groups, and their less than legitimate counterparts. I know I respond a lot better to "I'm just a viewer" than to "I've been spamming your e-mail/fax every 10 minutes for a week, why haven't you covered me?".

2) What TV stations want is "man on the street" appeal. Remember, they aren't programming to informed and educated groups, and they aren't really trying to inform. They want people to watch so they can make money. It's got to be sexy/appalling/heart-warming to make it onto affiliate TV. 99% of all press releases that arrive by e-mail and fax are looked at for 3-4 seconds and shit canned. We are flooded with loosely veiled sales pitches hundreds of times a day. Call. Ask for an Assignment Editor. Don't sound crazy. Start with the pay off. I.E. "Hello, I wanted to tell you about a protest that's going to happen at (fill in the blank). We have 99 kagillion people already committed to attend."

3) What you do has to be visual. This is also critical. I.E. if there's a lot of those stop signs in your market that have the "stop scientology" grafitti, you can call in as an IMPARTIAL VIEWER (critical), and report some locations. You can stage a protest/demonstration/rally. TV loves protests, events that have something to see, and a lot of random people for them to talk to.

4) It has to be EASY to cover. You are not going to get a reporter in Peoria, Illinois to do an investigative piece on Scientology. They have a lot to do, and a short time to do it in. If you make it easy on them, they will be a lot more likely to cover you. Don't think of a TV reporter as a reporter, think of them as a news presenter. Sad but true. You have to expect them to be skeptical, and in a very big hurry. Try to have the people you want them to talk to at hand. Try to do your thing on low volume news days, like Saturday to Tuesday. By Wednesday so much news is happening you'll get lost in the shuffle.

5) Make it pay off. If you do convince a station to cover something, and they show up only to see 3 neckbeards with a few shitty signs and a case of Mountian Dew, you will never get a second of coverage. I send crews out every day multiple times to check stuff out. If it looks lame, we spray it in case someone shoots you, and move on to things that will make it on the air.

In conclusion, the "Mention murder, it will get their attention!" is flat-out wrong. It'll just get the cops called on you. News is about local viewer appeal and relevancy. The most you'll accomplish is to get them to put news of your PROTEST on the air for 30-40 seconds, and try to get your message out that way. Yes they're hated, but this is exactly why PETA stages their ridiculous protests, they know how to get airtime, and if they get a few people to log onto their site and see what the fuss is about, mission accomplished.

CNN I-Report

CNN has a program in which viewers can submit breaking news stories here, through their website:

http://www.cnn.com/exchange/ireports/topics/forms/breaking.news.html

On 2/10 anonymous from all parts of the globe should send in there i-reports of the protests in there area. Anderson Cooper is critical of scientology and might run something on it. It’s a hot button issue and CNN might pick it up, at least for their website, Maybe we even on the TV news as well. Most media will use any excuse to talk about tom cruise, as it brings in lots of interest. CNN has a millions of views worldwide and this might make our cause well known. It would certainly increase the publicity and introduce us into the massive mainstream media. We could show the world we are serious. Showing all of Teegeeack that we are in every major city in force would be a strong message.

Wouldn't it be better to do this before 2/10? The more people we can draw before the protests the better.

Implementation:

Using Wi-Fi, cell phone cameras and email, protesters can upload recent video and picture to CNN I-report. This would be tantamount to live reporting from the battle lines. Starbucks, public libraries, college campuses and even some McDonalds all offer free Wi-Fi. It can them be packaged with a press release and sent into I-report.

If the aussiefags and eurofags can send in their I-reports in first, alerting the press of the US protested coming up, they might even send LIVE CNN COVERAGE. This would be golden. Scientologist can’t harass us in front of the eyes of the world, and we give our message to millions!

Some Anonymous cannot attend a protest in their area, but still want to help out. If they want to still participate and do there part, they can work as a “Home Base” for the protesters on the front, by relaying the pictures and video sent to them through e-mail or SMS, to CNN.

Result:

The CNN I-report offices would then be flooded with live stories of a world wide protest against scientology. Chances are they’re going to see a good news story and run with it. Nearly live video of scientologist harassment and suppression of free speech spread across the world in moments. Epic wins are had all around.

Remember your roots anonymous. We ARE the internet. We need to use it to our full advantage. The net is the worst enemy Scientologists have, and our strongest weapon. We need to use it to the maximum.

Knowledge is free.

For Later

This seems the most appropriate place to bring up this idea. Once we have the eyes of the media upon us, once the C0$ has seen that their normal harassment and litigation can't effectively stop us we need to request a live broadcast 'interview' with one or more of their top leaders where we can be allowed to press our attack and defend ourself as a group in the anonymous manner we hold so dear. It needs to be on one of the major US networks (they ultimately have the broadest reach in old media) and preferably involve one of their bigger names (which will draw in the broadest range of the mundane audience). For us to achieve our stated goals and to reap the maximum amount of epic lulz we must ultimately reach the largest possible audience of those beyond Anonymous and get them interested enough to act toward our ends as well, and this seems to me the most efficient method we could seek.
Regarding above: That sounds fine and dandy, but keep in mind that if a major news network actually gets a Co$ cat to interview on the air, we aren't going to be pressing the attack ourselves. As our old friend Admiral Ackbar might say, Anonymous doesn't do live interviews of that magnitude! Who of us would be the one to step forward and lend their voice (via darkened room and scrambler, lol) to the media? We can't risk the chance that it will be some failget middle schooler calling us 1337 h4x0rz DESU DESU. We will have to make such a strong case that the news network will represent our points to the interviewee for us. Either that, or whoever's doing all the PR dox and YouTube videos will have to step up without compromising their Anonymity. That said, breaking into the mass media would pretty much be one of the last levels before defeating the Final Boss, so to speak.
