This page contains a short description about Anonymous, and our war on the Church of Scientology. It is incomplete and quite possibly inaccurate, because whoever writes here, is writing from their own view of what they think we are. That being said however, it should give you a gist of what we're about. But to really understand us, you will have to dig deeper - MUCH deeper - than just this page. :)

[edit] Why is Anonymous attacking the Church of Scientology?

  • The CoS is a con disguised as a religion. Its members are made to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars for courses, books and auditing. When they "donate" all this money, they rise in the ranks of Scientologists. The higher up in the ranks one is, the more he/she learns about the secrets of the religion. For example, xenu and the volcano story are told to one who has donated to OTIII.
  • The CoS brainwashes and mistreats its members, sometimes going as far as killing them. ([1])
  • Scientology attacks ex-members. When somebody decides to leave the cult, their friends and even family are forced to "disconnect" from them. This means they can never have contact again. The cult also publicly smears and harasses ex-members and critics by spreading lies about them.
  • The cult suppresses free speech, online and offline.
  • Anonymous has no quarrel with the beliefs of Scientologists, although they may ridicule some of the more interesting concepts. Their fight is strictly against the Church of Scientology and related organizations' appalling practices.

[edit] What/who is Anonymous?

Many people misunderstand what we actually are.

Anonymous is not a single entity. Nobody can act "for Anonymous", because there is no entity to act for. Each of us are responsible for ourselves. Anonymous does not have a concept of "group responsibility".

Statements like "Anonymous did [X]" means something logically different from eg. "Corporation/country [C] did [X]". The former statement refers to the sum of all individuals; the latter statement refers to the group as a single entity, controlled by its leaders. The former statement can only be valid if the vast majority of all Anonymous really did [X]; the latter statement can be valid if the leaders of [C] orders the rest of the people to do [X].

Who are we?

Anonymous is everyone and no one. Anonymous has no leaders, no official spokespersons, no well-defined membership and no hierarchy. Anonymous is a label, and anyone who stands behind it is Anonymous. Everybody contributes. Anonymous meets on web forums, blogs, YouTube, Digg, wikis, chat rooms, universities, schools, workplaces, in the streets and wherever they may find each other. In the end, each of us is guided by his or her own moral compass.

It's important to note that Anonymous organizing activities are completely transparent, open, and accessible to anyone - so any claims made about Anonymous can be verified or disproved.

There are many descriptions of Anonymous, and none of them can ever be completely right, including this one.

[edit] How did this get started?

On January 16, a video of Tom Cruise, intended only for internal use by the Church of Scientology (CoS), was leaked on the Internet. When the Church of Scientology tried to take it down, they drew the attention of Anonymous. At first we were in it just for fun, and members of Anonymous attacked various CoS websites and prank called their phones and faxes. However, when we started reading about the CoS, we were horrified that such a dangerous and cruel organization is allowed to continue their illegal practices. We discontinued prank activity and changed our tactics. Soon, we started releasing information about the CoS on the Internet and we leaked their secret documents that describe the central parts of Scientology that most members are not allowed to see. This includes the story of Xenu, the alien overlord that blew up aliens in volcanoes, causing all our problems today. At this time Anonymous got reinforced by other people on the Internet who had also had enough of Scientology smearing critics and ex-members, and trying to suppress free speech. As our numbers grew, we decided to organize street protests outside all Scientology centers around the world. The date chosen for the first set of main protests was February 10, 2008. The next set of protests occurred on March 15, 2008.

[edit] What happened on February 10, 2008?

On February 10th, 2008, there were worldwide protests against the Church of Scientology. We held peaceful protests outside Church of Scientology buildings, informing the public and CoS members about the secrets and deeply immoral practices of the Church.

Due to our decentralized nature, nobody knows in exactly how many places protests were held. We have confirmations from the following cities:

[edit] Press Releases

Please be aware that Anonymous does not have a central leadership that can publish or approve press releases. That being said, bad ones will probably be removed from here quite quickly.

The initial statement of war, as released by Anonymous, was released on Youtube. It features a synthesized voice reading a declaration of war against the Church of Scientology. Within days, the video has had over 2,000,000 views. Watch the video here.

[edit] Did Anonymous send white powder to Scientology Centers?

Short answer: No.

On January 30, there were reports of mailing with white powder at Scientology centers in California. It turned out to be corn starch. Since anonymous has no formal structure, it is impossible to say that "Anonymous" did or didn't do something. However, we have done a thorough search of all websites, forums and other places associated with Anonymous have not found anyone planning, bragging about or even talking about sending white powder to the CoS. Our conclusion is that it was either the deed of a lone madman or the Church of Scientology sent it to themselves. The latter seems likely, given that CoS members have previous been convicted for sending fake bomb threats to the church and trying to blame it on critics (source: [5]). [edit] How has the Church of Scientology responded to Anonymous attacks?

The Church of Scientology has not responded to any of our criticism against their illegal and deeply immoral practices. Instead they have said that Anonymous are cyberterrorists, religious bigots, communists, nazis, weapon smugglers and anti-American. This is in line with their long-standing policies of "never defend - always attack", and "attack the attacker, not the argument". We can not even feel insulted by such ridiculous lies. Their resistance only makes our resolve harder.

Responses to the protests have differed between CoS centres around the globe. At almost all locations, protesters were filmed and photographed by CoS members and private investigators. Many reports have been made of protesters being followed, on foot and by car. There have been occasions of "bullbaiting" and numerous instances of the police being called for spurious or trivial matters. All of these are common and well documented CoS tactics used against critics.

Other responses have involved CoS centres closing for the day, holding spontaneous charity drives or other "good will" events in order to portray protesters negatively, the hiring of trucks and vans to block or obscure the area from protesters, and encouraging CoS members to bring their children to the centre - also intended to portray protesters negatively.
